SEADAY enroute to COSTA MAYA
Karaoke Contest Day! I had Karaoke last night, which went well. Good crowd, fun people. I am not sure if the Contest tonight will rise to the level of last weeks, but I sure hope so. I have seven hours of Karaoke today. Gyselle, our Brazilian on the team, has come down with something that sounds remarkably like the bronchitis and malaise I had on my second week here. It is her third week. Some initiatory welcome? I don’t know. But it certainly makes for a long day for everyone else. She had a private Karaoke function that a group on board had bought. I am now taking that over. This means that I will not be in the Dreamworks parade this afternoon.
Because my role in the parade is Shrek’s Wrangler I made sure to call JC, the man who embodies Shrek, to let him know. He is pretty self-sufficient and in helping him embody Shrek there is not much I actually do, other than a zipper here and there. He thanked me so profusely I got the impression that other wranglers don’t call when they get rescheduled. I would hate to have my Dreamworks family member wondering where the heck I was, so it just seemed common sense to let him know ahead of time so he could arrange to have someone else assist him.

I checked the weather today, and the storm that rerouted us has been named. Tropical Storm Emily. It’s path takes it, at this point, straight over Haiti, Cuba, and possibly the Keys, but most likely to the East and Miami. It is due to arrive, again at this point, at the same time we do. Can’t really reroute our final destination, so this ought to be interesting. It could be my first storm on a ship and the real test as to whether or not I am capable of being sea-sick. I don’t think I will be. I have never been sea-sick before…all that Norwegian blood in me, don’t you know! I’m kind of looking forward to it, but only because it is scheduled to only be a Tropical Storm.
The Captain has repeatedly said, during various talks, that the ship will not dock in winds that are more than 40mph. Well that is a low level Tropical Storm….I wonder what his plan will be for docking in FTL? I have never heard whether or not they add an extra Sea Day or not. I can’t imagine they would since everyone’s flights would be really messed up then. A hurricane I can see them postponing the docking…well, we will find out in a matter of days. Of course, judging from the typical storm it will more likely than not keep to it’s own schedule, so who knows when it will actually arrive, or what track it will be, or what category of storm it will build to. With all the landmasses it has to cross I can’t see that it would become an actual hurricane though.
Ralph is due to come up on Saturday for his monthly visit. This might be affected as well. Well…we can only wait and see…
It is now official. Amy told me yesterday that I will now be hosting the Final Farewell Party on the Promenade on Day 7. This is big. It is the last large party and I will be introducing the entertainment staff as well as the Cruise Director. She had had me shadow Luis last week, and he seemed nonplussed and said that I would be doing it eventually. I kept my mouth shut since I did not want to make waves and he has only been doing it for three weeks. The other night when Amy saw me she told me that it was now my gig. We were speaking about her upcoming promotion to CD, and she was mentioning to me that I should audition for Activities Manager, and that I should have my eye on becoming Bingo Manager in preparation. Joyce had just taken that over. I told Amy that as knowledgeable as I have become about team politics I had had that in mind, but would wait until one of them rotated off ship so that no one felt slighted. She said that she was the manager and it was her choice. Well, at least it was her that said it.
I am excited about being the host and know that I can do a good job. It is a step in the right direction, but it does make me a bit nervous. This ship is too small for politics and I don’t want to create waves, as it were. But I still want to forge ahead.
